The Mountain View Veterans Memorial is located at Eagle Park, 650 Franklin St., in downtown Mountain View, CA
History of the MemorialMountain View residents and others successfully funded a new Veterans Memorial in Mountain View by purchasing an engraving on a plaque in memory of a loved one.
The idea to create an inclusive memorial was initiated in 2013 by City Council after the downtown post office was named in honor of Mountain View resident, Army 1Lt. Kenneth Ballard, who was killed in Iraq in 2004. The memorial is located in Eagle Park, 650 Franklin Street, which is the site of the old Mountain View High School and nearby the Berlin Wall at the Library. Three existing memorial plaques were moved from other sites to be located at Eagle Park and a fourth plaque was added to recognize every resident who served in the armed forces. The design at Eagle Park includes a flagpole, military service emblems, and black granite plaques were incorporated in the existing wall that created the memorial. The memorial was dedicated on Veterans Day, November 11, 2015. American Legion Los Altos Post 558 serving Mountain View spear-headed the effort, and formed the Committee whose members fundraised for the project. Members represent American Legion Moffett Post 881, Moffett Field Historical Society, Google Veterans, and Gold Star Mothers. The members offered information and engraving applications over a 9-month period at every street festival and other events in 2014-15. Although required only to offer 5 plaques of 16 engravings, the committee wanted to ensure that every resident and veteran knew of this opportunity. At the dedication in 2015, all 17 columns facing the street were engraved, leaving a few more columns available on the other side for plaques (entrance to the playground). Donations from businesses, schools and individuals funded the memorial, in addition to funds raised through the engraving program. The Mountain View Veterans Memorial Corporation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and still accepts donations to help fund the annual Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies. |
